Advancing Brain Health, Independence, and Dignity for Aging Veterans
Initiative Overview
The Liniger Legacy Brain Health Initiative seeks to advance brain health, independence, and dignity for aging veterans affected by service‑related neurotrauma by delivering evidence‑based clinician education, accessible family resources, and accelerated translational research that bridges brain injury and geriatric care.
A Critical Need for Our Veterans
For thousands of military veterans across North America, the injuries sustained in service do not end when combat ends. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), blast exposure, and combat-related trauma often initiate a lifelong neurological journey that becomes increasingly complex with age. As veterans enter their sixties, seventies, and eighties, many face an accelerated risk of cognitive decline, dementia, emotional health challenges, and loss of independence.
Initiative Objectives
With the generous support of Gail and Dave Liniger and donors around the country, the North American Brain Injury Society (NABIS) has established the Liniger Legacy Brain Health Initiative, a comprehensive program dedicated to improving the lives of aging veterans living with the long-term consequences of neurotrauma. Through education, family support, and translational research, this initiative works to bridge the historic divide between brain injury care and geriatric medicine, ensuring that veterans receive the specialized support they deserve throughout the aging process.
- Equip clinicians with targeted CME, and practice resources tailored to aging veterans with TBI and combat-related neurotrauma.
- Deliver accessible, culturally responsive resources that help veterans and families navigate care and preserve independence.
- Convene interdisciplinary expert teams to translate and disseminate emerging science into consensus clinical practices and implementable protocols.
- Pilot and evaluate integrated care models that bridge neurotrauma, geriatric services with cultural specificity
