Brasília - The Capital of Brazil

rasília, was inaugurated in 1960. The city was designed by one of Brazil´s most important urban planners, Lúcio Costa, and originated from a singular, brave idea: the junction of two axis. As a distinct expression of modernism, the city destined to be the Capital of the Third Millennium was granted the status of Cultural and Historical Heritage of Mankind by UNESCO in 1987. Oscar Niemeyer, the architect responsible for the major monuments and government buildings in Brasília, shared the same ideals as did Lúcio Costa. Niemeyer´s bold and sensuous concrete and steel forms helped consolidate the futuristic and unique nature of Brasília.

Brasília has a unique geographical location. It rises out of the heart of Brazil´s central plateau region and is surrounded by small towns with crystal mines, waterfalls, and rare flora. An hour´s bus ride can take you out of the city´s hubbub and into the midst of nature´s serene beauty.

The city comes alive in the evening, with numerous restaurants, theaters, and cultural events. The Brazilian tradition of outdoor restaurants and bars can be enjoyed by everyone in the star-lit evenings of Brasília.

Brazil´s capital is a city with two seasons - dry and rainy seasons - and has a pleasant, agreeable climate with tropical days and cool evenings. Because it is a relatively young urban center, it is on the cutting edge of new discoveries and innovations - which can be witnessed in the bold architecture, in the energy of its people, and in the events which take place in the city.
